This carved stone Indian lamp niche from Gujarat is locally known as an alla. It dates to the 19th century and would have likely come from the entrance doorway to a wealthy merchant's home. This example is a particularly good quality piece that features a peacock standing atop a stylised temple flanked by parrots.
Hand carved from local stone they were normally used beside doorways with oil lamps or candles. But even without candles they look very decorative on a wall or to light a garden pathway at night
